thenumber on doctors/mafia/detective is determined on how many people are playingg.
but you got it right for the most part.
oh yah also when i played it….we had a story teller….like the storyteller told how people die and stuff.
pretty fun game(:

Separate from a deck of cards one ace, one king and enough cards from two through nine to accommodate the rest of the players. Pass out the cards to the players seated in a circle face down so no one sees the cards. Tell the players to look at their card and let no one else see it. The person who got the ace is the “Mafia”, the person who got the king is the “police”, and everyone else is a citizen.
The object of the game is to reveal who the “Mafia” is. The “Mafia” has the object of killing everyone. The game begins with everyone stating “they are not the Mafia”. At this point, based on the body language of the players and the tone of their voice others need to accuse who they think the “Mafia” is. If two agree, the person is asked if they are the “Mafia”. If they are, the game is over (unlikely), if they are not, the whole group is asked to close their eyes by a neutral party NOT in the game. The “Mafia” is asked to open their eyes and point to a person they want killed. They then close their eyes, the “police” is asked to open their eyes, and is asked who they think the “Mafia” is by pointing. If they are correct the neutral party signals so with a nod. If they are wrong the neutral party signals no with the shake of their head. It is important to hide the identity of the “Mafia” and “police” by not talking AT them when they are asked questions, so their location in the circle is known to all. All are then asked to open their eyes, the killed party is told they are dead and may not speak.
At this point the people are mad at the killing and three must agree as to whom they think the “Mafia” is and they accuse the person (the Mafia may be in this group therefore secrecy is key). The accused is allowed a defense, if it is not acceptable to the three accusers, the accused is killed, and is asked if they are the “Mafia”. The game ends if they are or continues if they are not with the accused now dead. OR after the defense the accusers may with draw their accusation, and may not re-accuse the person until the next round The game continues, with the “police” having the only additional knowledge. If they know who the “Mafia” is or is not, they may influence the rest of the group by making suggestive statements but NOT BY SAYING they ARE the “police”. The reason is so the “Mafia” can pretend they have knowledge also to influence people. They game becomes better and easier as all get the hang of it. It is best played with more than 6 people.

Here’s how I’ve always played it…

There is a large group of people. The most important person of the game is called “God” (you can give him another name if you want). “God” does not compete in the game, so he/she should trade out with others if multilpe games are played.

1. Everyone sits in a big circle. “God” is picked.

2. “God” tells everyone to closeIt their eyes. (players eyes remain closed throughout this whole process)

3. “God” picks the mafia. Depending on how many people are in the circle, the amount of mafia may range from ten people to three. It’s up to you.

(to pick players, “god” states “I am picking…” then taps how many players on the shoulder they wish to fill that role)

4. God picks one to three guardian angels (again, depending on group size)

5. God picks one to three police. (based on group)

6. God says “Mafia wake up”. Everyone else remains eyes-closed. Mafia open their eyes.

7. God asks “who would you like to kill? or Who would you like to take out?” The mafia silently points in agreement at one (you can have multiple people die at a time if your group is huge, but this will end the game quicker) person they wish to be out of the game.

8. God tells Mafia to go to sleep (close eyes). God asks the guardian angel to wake up.

(the guardian angels purpose is to save the right person from a mafia death. All angels, like the mafia, must agree to saving one person, if there are multiple angels)

9. God asks angels “who would you like to save.” Angels point and God tells them to go back to sleep.

10. God asks police to wake up.

(Not all games have police. If you wish to have an easier game, you can completely leave them out. They just add some more time and or roles for people to have, as well as more motives and such for the mafia)

11. God asks police “who would you like to arrest? or Who would you like to try at court?” Police point and go back to sleep.

12. God tells everyone to wake up or “it’s morning”. Now comes the fun part. Who died throughout the night?

(At this point, the game can be extremely fun if God comes up with a great story as to what happened to the person. They can be super funny and a great way to entertain everyone)

13. God announces who died. If the guardian angels chose to save a person the mafia tried to kill, that person remains in the game. If not, they are out. If the angels saved someone who was not killed, they have done nothing.

*If you have picked police*

14. If the police have picked a member of the mafia to arrest, that member is now out. If the person was not a mafia member, they are still out of the game, no matter their role.

HOW TO WIN

After this whole ordeal, it’s time for the citizens to guess who the mafia really is. There are many ways to do this, but my personal favorite is the town up-rising way. Everyone must take a vote or decide on one person they think is a member of the mafia. That person is either put in jail or killed by the people. After the person is annoucned, they are out of the game, reguardless of their role)

*No one may say what their role is during the process of town-uprising. Everyone has a say in who to take out. No one may give any hints as to their role*

15. Repeat steps 6-14 and town-uprising until game ends.

Mafia wins if they are the last group (or single person) standing. Everyone else wins if all the mafia are taken out before they are all out of the game.
