How much is Godfather (the novel or the film) accurate?

gangster games
Kaja Bilek asked:

How much are the novel and the film Godfather historicaly accurate? Mario Puzo, author of Godfather, admitted, that he never saw gangster before he wrote the novel. I wanted to google it somehow, but the internet is full of advertisement on the game/the movies DVD – so I will be happy even if you tell me link to some article about accuracy of the Puzo’s novel/the Coppola’s film.

The novel is not historically accurate, however almost every mobster of Italian descent will agree that the overall message of the film does convey to the audience how La Cosa Nostra operates. Some of the people and of course the locales depicted in the movie are based upon real life characters and places. It is based loosely on the Genovese crime sydicate (”family”).

The history channel is an excellent resource for this type of thing. I recently saw a great show on Joe Bonanno the real Godfather. There are tons of shows on the station about gangsters and their rise. There are two history channels one is on A&E.

Ironically I started watching it after seeing Tony Soprano liked the channel because of the decisions of generals.

I’ve given you two links where you can browse the stations and/or order videos. Enter the search key as well while on the site, mafia, mafiaso, The Mob, and list the names of famous gansters like Frank Capone, Bugsey Siegal…etc. You’ll find it all. An interesting topic. Great question.

I’ve read the novel and seen the movies (about a million times), and I would be suprised if the things that went on in them really happened, although I could see them being exaggerated versions of the kind of things that did go on in mob families.

Here was the only article I found (it’s just about Godfather II, but it should be helpful):
