If you download a game that has a free trial, how does it know you’ve downloaded it before?

I think it puts a hook in the system registry… but I’m not sure. It depends on the game wrapper the publisher uses… that’s why you can sometimes download the same game from another site (for example, bigfishgames.com + gamesocks.com) and get a new trial.
I’d be interested to hear the answer to this as well.
Depends on the game. Normally, one of two things:
1. Registry data (you can modify this by running “regedit”, but this could be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing).
2. Files on your hard drive which are used to identify installation information.
