Why does my microphone sound weird on online games, but fine everywhere else?

When I record karaoke or record my voice with my microphone everything sounds extremely clear, but then when I play online games like Half-Life 2 Deathmatch or Team Fortress 2 ect. its very hard to understand anything. Why is this?

It could be the codec or compression settings or some other settings within the game itself. Especially if it sounds fine in other programs. Voice chat programs use codecs to compress the audio. If the compression is set too high, it can lower the quality of the audio. You also sacrifice quality for size when it comes to lossy compression typically used for voice chat.
Dig around and see if you can find settings relating to quality or compression.
