Can I play online Xbox 360 games with a Silver membership?

I was just wondering, because I’m thinking of getting a 360, and i found one that includes a Silver membership, and Gold 1-month subscription. So, can I play online games, like Gears of War, with a Silver membership? If not, what else does Gold allow that Silver doesn’t?

you cant play game on the silver but the gold allows you to play online
silver membership means that you can message your friends and download demos, but you can’t play games online like gears of war.
Gold is like silver, but you can play games online.
